For me i feel more black than white even though i was raised by my white mom. I think its because black people accept mixed people better than white most of the time or because where i live theres more black people and i dont have much in common with the white kids |

good question, kinda tricky. i think it starts with relatives, and i would say the euro-side has no conception of the hell caught in blackness. they can sympathize, smile, and shrug, but of course that's still not having a clue, and it distances me from them.
the afri-side tends to make their world too small - let things be circumscribed by 'blackness'. it's a friggin' drag. yeah, it's a bit of war just to be yourself, 'cause people tend to box you in, but if there's a war worth fighting, that's the one.
the difference is, on a closeness/intimate level (vs. a social level), the euro-side will still never get it, and the afri-side is quite cool. they can comprehend everything, even if they don't want to get out of the 'blackness box' (you know, all the things you're supposed to do or not do, think about or not think about, be or not be, because you're black). if i want out of the box, i often have to leave them behind.
aside from family, i think i'm most comfortable with people who aren't completely comfortable on either side, because i am. i like people who are hard to pin down, never sitting nicely in one camp.

Reply with quote | #5 | if we were to go into stereotypes.
id have to say i relate better personality wise to white people....i talk "white" and most of the people i associated with (but i had no real friends just associations) in high school were white.
because i was only raised by my white side i never really got along with black people. im not into rap, or the gangsta scene and all the black people in my school were like into that, only a few were not. im a clean cut geek. i like pop music and classical music and new age music (although i do like R&B and Motown). actually i kinda dont fit in with either. im what you would consider an outcast, im weird, im misanthropic and like to be alone. im not into most things that most people are into.....
but when it comes to race, i kinda feel closer to blacks....i sometimes even say im black on applications cause they dont provide an option for mulattoes. and when it comes to racism and discrimination, i defintely can relate better to blacks, because we mulattoes are thrown in the same boat as them. being half white has yet to save any of us from the hate and racism blacks endure.

Glad to hear it, VRed. I'm pretty isolated on these issues, so when someone can mirror the thoughts, it feels pretty good.
This is actually probably the first time it has happened. Hey, where's my party hat?!

I don't think there is a feeling of being white or of being black, like a natural feeling. I think anyone can feel something similar to someone else regardless of what they look like. |
