Mulatto Student Groups

Is it reasonable that Colleges and Universities create student support groups or social organizations for Mulatto students? I currently attend NC State University, a predominantly White school, and of the few Minority groups that attend here, it's super difficult to find anyone who is Mulatto. The Black Students Board here does not address the issues pertaining to our community. I am grateful that the Black Community accepts us as one of their own, but it would be nice if they would address our issues once in a while. Not only this, but it would be a great way to connect to other Mulattoes and feel completely accepted for who we are.

What do you all think? Is it unreasonable to request that higher learning institutions provide social or supportive outlets for Mulatto students or any student of Biracial background? Or is this a little over the top.
Thanks to all those who reply

Forum: Mulatto Topics

What will my biracial child's hair look like

Hi all,

I'm quite new to this website. Since my boyfriend and I are talking about taking our relationship to the next level I will end up with mulatto children hence we've stumbled on this amazing website! :-). I am African with Eryka Badu or Yaya Dacosta type of hair (4B I think) and he is English with curly hair. I am just curious as to what my child's hair would look like. I secretely want her/him to have a 'fro like Heidi Klum & Seal's children and would be kinda dissappointed if they came out with straight or wavy hair. Nevertheless I will still love them!

Forum: General Topics

I recently say a movie called The Black list 2 where Maya talks about being mixed and I thought it was really interesting what she had to say. I found a clip from it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys0M9u0wQUA But its definitely worth watching the movie to see the rest of what she has to say.

Forum: Mulatto Celebs

I'm dating a mulatto

So I met this guy that happens to be black and white as well. The relationship is great so far and we have a lot in common. The fact that were both mulattoes doesn't really come up a lot between us like I thought it would, which in some ways is good. I'm so happy!

Forum: Love/Marriage/Relationships

African, of course because thats where the nation is located.
Though some and others refer to them being Middle Eastern.
Yes, majority is light skinned(ooh mulatto) and are Muslim, but hey, theyre black like the rest of us, right?

I know one Egyptians girl says she's 'other'.

I think the Greeks invaded Egypt and mixed with them.

It just annoys me how some people feel that since they're light then they're not black.Actually i find it racists.

Any other thoughtS?

Forum: General Topics

The African-American (light,dark half, 1/4) Hair

I decided to no longer relax my hair since the last time in late July, its gettting more healtheir and curlier each week
The other week I washed it and didnt style it for days and I noticed that people looked at me weird.
Even today (i washed my hair last saturday) a girl i know, dark skinned, commetned that I need to relax my hair because it didnt look nice. She is quite obsessed with her appearance and relaxes her hair a lot, its bone straight. I told her that Im NEVER relaxing it again and she gave me a weird look and left.

I feel that the relaxer is deep rotted in American and black AMerican history.
Its always the brown skinned girls saying "I an 100% black, all African and proud". But they wear weaves and relax it all the time. They even make fun of people with nappy hair and ones that are really dark.

For example: this brownskinned girl made an HUGE announcement about getting hair extensions,ew, and kept fishing for comliments. SHe is super annoying, especially being self-centered.

I must add: There are many girls at my school who would never wear their natural, unstraightened hair. I feel all badasses compared to them lol.

Has anyone witnessed this? BTW, I live in Louisiana and you'd think more women would proudly sport braids and dreads.

Forum: General Topics

Has anyone ever dated a Muslim or non-Muslim middle easterner?

I was just wondering if anyone has ever dated someone who was Middle Eastern and or Muslim. The guy I'm interested in right now is Muslim and has been living in the US for 7yrs. and is really American. He eats a lot of country and soul food and speak both English and Arabic fluently. He is helping me with my Arabic and Im teaching him Spanish since its my 2nd language.
I know a lot about Islam though I am not Muslim and do not plan on becoming one. He is the oldest in his family and he's told me his father isn't as strict as he was was when they first came here. His father went back to the college my father works at, a Historically Black College, so I doubt he has a problem with African-Americans.

We've known each other for about 2 months and he's brought up that'd he'd like to be my boyfriend, which I agree with but we're still discussing. My father knows a lot of Muslims and my parents have no problem with me dating someone out of my race. My parents' opinion is the only one that actually matters to me to be honest. My Dad's side has two kids who are dating Latinos and they dont have any issue with it. My Mother's side is straight up country and closed-minded. They talked bad about my mom's brother when he married a German woman and had twins with her. I strongly dislike my mother's side and she knows this, I always come up with excuses when we have to visit them.

Anyway, if anyone has anything to add, I would appreciate it.

BTW: If all u have to say is that he'll make me convert or that he'll treat me bad, don't comment. Ive read many blog posts with people only saying racists, negative things.
And yes, theyre are many non-Muslim women who marry Muslim men and are happy.

Forum: Love/Marriage/Relationships

While watching MAdTV, I noticed that one of the cat members, Keegan Michael Key has an FGM phenotype, so I did some Google research and found this:

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_c8LNGp0k9_c/RzyzI6Dmg4I/AAAAAAAABWs/Mq2UFtkP3q4/s320/keegan.jpg&imgrefurl=http://undercoverblackman.blogspot.com/2007/11/improvising-while-black.html&usg=__d_RQGwsDYs1uXp2L8n-jISuBxtE=&h=320&w=213&sz=18&hl=en&start=18&tbnid=lbD5PbBkrcFwKM:&tbnh=118&tbnw=79&prev=/images%3Fq%3DKeegan%2BMichael%2BKey%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

Forum: Mulatto Celebs

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."

If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.

"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

Bardwell estimates that he has refused to marry about four couples during his career, all in the past 2 1/2 years.

Beth Humphrey, 30, and 32-year-old Terence McKay, both of Hammond, say they will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint.

Humphrey, an account manager for a marketing firm, said she and McKay, a welder, just returned to Louisiana. She plans to enroll in the University of New Orleans to pursue a masters degree in minority politics.

"That was one thing that made this so unbelievable," she said. "It's not something you expect in this day and age."

Humphrey said she called Bardwell on Oct. 6 to inquire about getting a marriage license signed. She says Bardwell's wife told her that Bardwell will not sign marriage licenses for interracial couples. Bardwell suggested the couple go to another justice of the peace in the parish who agreed to marry them.

"We are looking forward to having children," Humphrey said. "And all our friends and co-workers have been very supportive. Except for this, we're typical happy newlyweds."

"It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzmann. "The Supreme Court ruled as far back as 1963 that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."

The ACLU sent a letter to the Louisiana Judiciary Committee, which oversees the state justices of the peace, asking them to investigate Bardwell and recommending "the most severe sanctions available, because such blatant bigotry poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the administration of justice."

"He knew he was breaking the law, but continued to do it," Schwartzmann said.

According to the clerk of court's office, application for a marriage license must be made three days before the ceremony because there is a 72-hour waiting period. The applicants are asked if they have previously been married. If so, they must show how the marriage ended, such as divorce.

Other than that, all they need is a birth certificate and Social Security card.

The license fee is $35, and the license must be signed by a Louisiana minister, justice of the peace or judge. The original is returned to the clerk's office.

"I've been a justice of the peace for 34 years and I don't think I've mistreated anybody," Bardwell said. "I've made some mistakes, but you have too. I didn't tell this couple they couldn't get married. I just told them I wouldn't do it."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091015/ap_on_re_us/us_interracial_rebuff

Forum: General Topics

Mulatto/Mulatta Dating

Im a mulatto. My father is Irish(white) and my mother African-American. I have dated asians, whites, and hispanics. I have never dated a black woman. I would like to experience dating a fellow mulatta, but one who comes from the same background as me. Has anyone ever dated some exactly from the same background as you? If so what was your experience like?
Forum: Love/Marriage/Relationships

Coming across other Mulattoes

I've always told people that have asked that the area I live in is fairly conservative, some have disagreed with me, but this is just my opinion. It seems that lately I have noticed more and more mulatto children. I know this may seem funny to some, but I swear it seems ever where I turn I see them, now. It amazes me, because I don't know if it's because I haven't really noticed before or what. Just recently, at my job, I meet another mulatto and its great. We have so much in common, similar childhoods, and are becoming fast friends. I think growing up It never really crossed my mind that there were other mulatto children out there, like me, that were facing the same obstacles. In all, I'm very glad I've found this site and very glad I've meet someone locally, as well.

Forum: General Topics

A Choice of White kids or Black kids?

From my 34 years of experience on earth as a mulatto I have concluded that we mulattoes have a very real choice of either having black phenotype offspring or white phenotype offspring depending on who we choose to mate with, a black mate or a white mate. I know it's not 100% accurate that you will have black or white-looking children but it's a very strong possibility that you have to consider. Let's face it we live in a very visual world where we tend to subconsciously identify/group with each other phenotypically and/or culturally.
I grew up with about a dozen or so mulattoes and some had kids with white mates and the others had kids with black mates. All of the mulattoes that had kids with black mates had black phenotype children and just the opposite for the mulattoes with white mates.

My point is have you ever thought about or planned on having a child with specific phenotype in mind? It's not far fetched because I have met many black women that told me they don't want dark children and preferred a lighter-skinned man to have kids with in an effort to have pretty brown or light-skinned children, they even said "good hair" was a bonus. On the other end of the spectrum I've met white women that purposely chose a black mate to have mulatto children b/c they thought mixed kids are the cutest ( we do make cute kids lol).

As we all know colorism is still very real in our society in the US.

I will be honest, although I feel closer to my black family than my white family I've always envisioned having quadroon children. I have no idea why b/c deep down I feel it's very ignorant that I should feel that way. My ex-fiancee (white) and I even talked about having our very own Mariah Carey (phenotype) baby. I know this sounds stupid but I was really curious to see how white my kid would come out. I envisioned my child being fair/tan skinned, having greenish blue eyes like my ex and straight or wavy fine hair. I mostly dated white women.

I know it shouldn't matter what race our mate is but we do have a very real choice at the cross roads, either down the black road or white road. You can almost guarantee that a mulatto will have a black phenotype child with a black mate and I know several mulatto women and men that purposely chose the black road in an effort to "keep the family black.". There is nothing wrong with choosing to go either way but I just wanted to get your feelings and/or experience on this subject.

The media generally encourages monoracial unions which could be a psychological reason we subconciously select a monoracial mate. How often do you see movies or television dipicting two mixed people in a relationship or even an interracial relationship? The only movie I can think of that shows two mixed individuals in any sort of relationship is the movie Feast of all Saints and Lost Boundaries(Based on a true story). There was only one sitcom called True Colors back in the 80's that was solely based on an interracial family BUT with NO mixed kids, only monoracial kids from a previous marriage. The show only lasted two seasons before being cancelled.

PS- I also know mulattoes who purposely choose NOT to have kids at all b/c they fear going down either road or just don't want kids at all for whatever reason.

Examples:

Author of "One Drop," Bliss Broyard, a quadroon, with her father, a mulatto, chose to have a "white" family and pass as white (himself and his kids).

Some people believe that it was "politically pertinent" for Obama to choose a black mate and have a black phenotype family in order to gain the majority vote in his bid for President of the US, which ultimately proved successful.

Forum: Mulatto Topics
